Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program

The PGP was supposed to open in April or May 2021 for sponsors to submit their expression of interest to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada and become permanent residents. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the opening of the said program is still uncertain. Be that as it may, just in case it opens in the second half of this year, there are essential requirements that sponsors need to know so that they can submit their EOIs as soon as the program opens.

These are as follows:

  • The sponsor and/or co-sponsor must be at least 18 years old or above

  • The sponsor and/or co-sponsor must be a permanent resident/s of Canada or a Canadian citizen/s

  • The sponsor and/or co-sponsor live in Canada

  • The sponsor and/or co-sponsor must have filed their taxes for at least three years prior to submitting their sponsorship application (that is when they get a slot) - PROOF OF INCOME

  • The sponsor and/or co-sponsor must have the minimum necessary income (the MNI) for the last three years prior to submitting the sponsorship application

If you are planning to sponsor your parent/s or grandparent/s be sure that you have met the MNI for 2018, 2019, and 2020. The good news is, the previous formula of MNI plus 30% is not used for the 2020 income. They simply require the MNI for the tax year 2020 (note the MNI plus 30% is still the formula for 2018 and 2019 tax years).
