Permanent Resident Pathway for Refugee Claimants - Health Care Workers

If you filed a refugee claim before March 13, 2020 and you were issued a work permit after you filed your refugee claim, you might be able to qualify for permanent residency if you meet ALL of the following requirements:

  1. Your claim that was filed before March 13, 2020 is pending or rejected.

  2. You still have a valid work permit.

  3. You have worked in the health care sector in the occupations enumerated below for at least 120 hours between March 13, 2020 to August 14, 2020 AND worked full time (at least 30 hours/week) for at least 6 months before August 31, 2021 or at least 750 hours of part time work.

    1. Nursing coordinators and supervisors (NOC 3011)

    2. Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses (NOC 3012)

    3. Licensed practical nurses (NOC 3233)

    4. Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates (NOC 3413)

    5. Allied primary health practitioners (NOC 3124)

    6. Home support workers (NOC 4412)

It is important to note that if you meet the requirements, the IRCC will process and approve your PR application within 4 to 6 weeks (per my professional experience). If you have worked as a personal support worker, care aide for the past two years and you are a refugee claimant, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency (provide you meet all the enumerated requirements).
